She makes art to explore her own identity and carve out spaces for voices that need to be heard, inviting all to listen.
Lament in Smoke was created remembering the aftermath of the COVID-19 pandemic and ongoing global conflicts. In this poignant installation, Kim Cheung draws upon her personal journey through grief to offer visitors a space for collective mourning and healing. Inspired by the ancient tradition of burning incense to honour the departed, Lament in Smoke invites visitors to engage in the transformative act of grieving. This instillation serves as a reminder of the importance of carving out spaces for grief, where emotions can be acknowledged, shared, and ultimately transmuted into moments of peace and connection. Sculptures of incense are at the heart of this instillation. As the fragrant smoke rises, it carries with it the collective memories of those who have passed, forging a connection between the physical world and the realm of the departed.
