Ksenia Shkarina
Ksenia Shkarina is a visual artist, who works with painting, sculpture and digital art. Their artworks usually bend reality in an exaggerated way: either in a good light, if in a bad. Ksenia Shkarina is a Russian born artist, who initially honed their artistic skills in Nizhny Novgorod’s art school for 4 years, participating in exhibitions for the celebrations and in school competitions. After their immigration to Canada they continued their studies as a student of Veronika Kvasetskya. They were participating in a portrait competition. They started their degree in Integrative arts in 2023 to explore different materials and ways to make art. They were a part of a “Blurred boundaries” exhibition, with a sculpture highlighting the human influence on the ecosystem. Ksenia Shkarina is a young artist with an unusual vision that hopefully will proceed their career as an artist.
My whole life I struggled with my sense of my own gender, so I thought about a way to visualise how fluid gender is. I will take a spinning base and paper. In the paper I’ll cut out human figurines, creating an animation of a male figure turning into a female and back. I’ll put them in order and glue them to the base. I’ll use a flashlight and a piece of paper to make the shadow dance, when the base is spinning.
