Into a Kaleidoscope

Maggie Tsang

Maggie Tsang is a visual artist with a background in graphic design. She’s also passionate about photography. Her photos encompass a wide variety of subjects, including documentation, street and still-life photography. Despite occasionally challenging herself to address social issues, her art doesn't always aim for broader societal commentary. Instead, she crafts art for the sole purpose of joy during the process. Maggie’s inspiration often comes from conversations (and occasional disagreements) with family and friends, channelling the energy of these interactions into her work.

“Lost Time”

Many of us have said things that we didn’t mean to say to our loved ones, whether they’re family, friends or partners. Some of us struggle to express our true feelings. If there were a magic telephone that allowed us to call anyone or reverse anything we’ve said, what number would you dial?

For this project, I intend to create a telephone recorder that allows the audience to record messages to people they might have lost contact with or revisit conversations or arguments they regret. I plan to pick up a vintage telephone, preferably one with a rotary dial, and attach
a recording machine or a dictaphone to record the messages. Participants will be invited to record messages as they wish, which will then be collected and included as part of the artwork.

I hope this project encourages reflection on our feelings and inspires us to prevent the same mistakes we have made. Additionally, I hope it provides a means of coping or reconciliation, especially for messages intended for those we've lost touch with.
