SOPHIA KOUDRIAVTSEVA
Sophia Koudriavtseva is a multidisciplinary artist who focuses on depicting the relationship between humans and nature. Her unique artistic style acts an imaginative lens through which the viewer can see the world anew–whether through realistic depictions of nature or surrealist compositions that are metaphors for deeper issues, she intends to incite appreciation for the natural world, and hopes that the viewer will walk away with a new outlook on life. She often produces digital works to show the presence of technology in the modern world and its influence on individuals, particularly a disinterest in the natural world. Sophia’s most recent work–an acrylic painting on canvas with 3d elements titled “Nature’s Attack”--has been displayed at the 2024 York U Integrative Arts Showcase "Into the Kaleidoscope".

"Nature's Attack" is a 24x32 inch acrylic on canvas painting that shows plants overtaking a human face/torso, with 3d elements from the natural world like real moss, as well as rocks and fake flowers. As said in my future project proposal from last semester, “I wanted to make this piece to show plants overtaking humans, which is the opposite of what usually happens in the modern world. Usually, humans “attack” the environment for our own selfish needs i.e. through deforestation practices, oil rigging etc. I’m inspired by a mixed media self portrait I did in high school where I depict myself as a corpse with flowers overtaking me– this piece also depicts the common theme I use in my art of connection between humans and nature.” After viewing my piece I want the audience to walk away thinking more about humanity’s historically destructive actions against the environment, and of what they could do to help.
